The Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, a top-10 ranked program at the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business, awarded over $396,000 in scholarships to over 105 student entrepreneurs for the 2024-25 academic year. Most of the scholarships come with the opportunity to gain leadership skills and experience while managing many activities for aspiring entrepreneurs.

Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute Awards Over $1.5 Million in Scholarships & Waivers for 2023-24

The Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, a top-10 ranked program at the University of Utah, and the David Eccles School of Business awarded over $1.5 million in scholarships and tuition waivers to over 140 student entrepreneurs for the 2023-24 academic year. Most of the scholarships come with the opportunity to gain leadership skills and experience while managing many activities for aspiring entrepreneurs.

34 student entrepreneurs admitted to Lassonde Founders program for 2023-24

The Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute - a top-10 ranked division of the David Eccles School of Business at the University of Utah - welcomed the fourth group of Lassonde Founders for the 2023-24 academic year. Thirty-four students, including some returning to the program for the second or third year, were admitted into the residential entrepreneur program for undergraduate students. They moved into Lassonde Studios in August for the 2023-24 academic year.

47 founders enroll in the Master of Business Creation program for fall 2023

The Department of Entrepreneurship & Strategy in partnership with the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute at the University of Utah's David Eccles School of Business welcomed 47 founders into the award-winning Master of Business Creation (MBC) program starting fall 2023. They will be accelerating their startup companies in this rapidly growing program with help from personalized mentoring, applied curriculum, generous scholarships, access to grants and more. Nineteen of the founders who started 18 companies are enrolling in MBC Online, a virtual, part-time option that spans three semesters. Twenty-eight of the founders who started 26 companies are enrolling in MBC Full-Time, an in-person option that spans two semesters. Some of the startups have more than one founder in the program.

50 students complete Lassonde+X program in 2022-23

A group of 50 students completed the Lassonde+X program during the past academic year. Lassonde+X is a three-course program that allows any undergraduate student at the University of Utah to "entrepreneur your major" - the "X" is their major. The program is offered by the Department of Entrepreneurship & Strategy, in partnership with the Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute, at the David Eccles School of Business.

U student named Air Force ROTC Cadet of the Year

Natalie Stephens, a senior from Naperville, Illinois majoring in Criminology, is the Air Force Reserve Officers Training Corps (AFROTC) Cadet of the Year for 2022. Chosen by the Navy Federal Credit Union's ROTC All-American Scholarship Program, Stephens is one of three cadets selected from 15 national finalists representing Air Force, Army and Navy/Marines ROTC programs. In addition to a $6,500 scholarship for Stephens, the award also provides a $5,000 donation to the University of Utah's AFROTC general scholarship fund. Cadet Stephens was recognized, along with the other two Cadets of the Year, at the halftime show of the Military Bowl in Annapolis, Maryland on December 28th.

Eleven U students nominated as semi-finalists for Fulbright awards for 2023-24

The national Fulbright Program, sponsored by the U.S. State Department, has selected 11 University of Utah students as semi-finalists this year, a record number for the U. Last year's total of 10 semi-finalists was also a record number. This year's list has eight undergraduate students and three graduate students, including five English Teaching Assistant semi-finalists, two Study semi-finalists (seeking an M.A. degree) and four Research Grant semi-finalists. Countries include Germany, Taiwan, Spain, Czech Republic, Vietnam, Croatia, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Canada and Greece. Making it to the semi-finalist round is a significant accomplishment in the Fulbright competition and means that the applications have been forwarded by the Fulbright National Screening Committee to the Fulbright Commission or U.S. Embassy in the host country for final review. Finalists will be notified later this spring, with the timing of notifications varying by country.

This is the third group to graduate from this unique program designed specifically for entrepreneurs.

Largest-ever cohort of U grad students awarded prestigious NSF fellowship

Twenty University of Utah graduate students have been offered awards in the National Science Foundation's Graduate Research Fellowship Program (NSF GRFP) for 2022, the largest U cohort to date. The prestigious fellowship supports outstanding doctoral and research-based master's students doing research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics, or STEM, disciplines. A total of 17 fellowship winners received their baccalaureate degrees here at the U, the largest group of winners ever who trained at the U as undergraduates. "We had really moved the mark over the past few years, but this year we hit it out of the park," said David Kieda, dean of the U's Graduate School. Established in 1952, the NSF GRFP is the oldest fellowship program of its kind. The 2022 fellows receive a three-year annual stipend of $34,000, a $12,000 cost of allowance for tuition and fees, and numerous research and professional development opportunities. Kieda notes that this year's cohort of 20 fellows is the sixth-highest among Pac-12 peers and includes graduate students in 16 different departments, ranging from Child Development to Ecology to Biomedical Engineering.

Nine students win big at 2021 DECA competitions

The University of Utah chapter of the Distributive Education Clubs of America, better known as DECA, won big in 2021. Nine members of the competitive business organization were awarded more than 25 titles between the state and international competitions held virtually. The University of Utah chapter was recognized for its exceptional leadership, service and community involvement at the international level with the Presidential Leadership Passport Award, the highest honor for chapters within the organization.

Presidential interns for 2021-22 announced

The Office of the President has selected 10 students to participate in the Presidential Internship in Higher Education program for 2021-2022 academic year. The program provides undergraduate students from diverse fields and backgrounds with the opportunity to learn from and collaborate with the president and other senior administrators, giving them an insider's look into the nuances and complexities of higher education. Presidential interns participate in regular seminars, work on strategic projects and act as student representatives at various university functions and events. Senior leaders at the U benefit from student insight, perspective and collaboration in helping shape the university's exceptional educational experience. Since its inception in 1992, more than 150 students have participated in the program. For many, the experience was a catalyst to a career in higher education. Others have gone on to leadership and career opportunities in public administration, nonprofit organizations, business, civic and public service.

Sahar Kanishka wins the 2021 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award

Sahar Kanishka wins the 2021 Outstanding Undergraduate Research Award in the College of Science at the University of Utah. She is in her junior year in the Honors College as a double major in biology and business administration. Kanishka has been an active member of the Gagnon laboratory in the U's School of Biological Sciences since the fall of 2018. "Sahar is a natural and experienced leader, with a burning enthusiasm and curiosity for science and how it relates to the outside world. I would place Sarah in the upper 5% of undergraduates I have mentored in the past, many of who have gone on to elite graduate and medical schools," said Jamie Gagnon, assistant professor of biological sciences. Kanishka is a young star scientist who has supported the STEM community through her advocacy for women and under-represented minorities on campus. She has also represented Utah while presenting her research at state and national conferences, and will co-author several peer-reviewed manuscripts from the Gagnon lab over the next few years. She has received funding for her work through ACCESS, the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, and the Biology Research Scholars program here at the U. She has done all of this in addition to being an Honors double major, with an elite GPA.

Top Science and Engineering Students Selected for ACCESS 2021-2022

24 incoming freshmen and transfer students were selected to be a part of the 2021-2022 cohort of ACCESS, a year-long scholarship and research program that provides students from a variety of backgrounds with a supportive path into STEM degrees and later careers. Students from all over Utah and even across the U.S. will start their STEM journey this summer with an ACCESS-exclusive course that spans all STEM disciplines, from math and chemistry to engineering and earth sciences. During their freshman year, these students will be paired with a world-class scientist or engineer for mentorship in research. A year of ACCESS informs academic and career goals at the earliest possible stage, builds social awareness, unites a group of like-minded peers and connects first-year STEM students to a network of over 800 program alumni. ACCESS is proud to welcome these phenomenal students who are truly inspired by science and committed to advancing equity and diversity in STEM. This group will go on to be leaders in their fields and lifelong advocates for STEM education. Congratulations and welcome to the start of a lifetime!
